Social media videos show people in Aleppo, Syria, bringing down the statue of the deceased brother of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Bassel-al-Assad, and the bust of Hafez al-Assad, Bashar’s late father and predecessor. Both moments took place as Syrian opposition forces seized control of much of the country’s second-largest city Aleppo. A rebel alliance launched a surprise attack this week, reigniting a conflict that has been mostly static for years. It is the first time Syrian rebels have set foot in Aleppo since government forces regained control during the civil war in 2016.
