The Supreme Court has ruled that "woman" in UK law refers to biological sex.
The decision follows a long-running legal battle between the Scottish government and a women’s campaign group.
The Scottish government had argued that transgender people with a gender recognition certificate are entitled to sex-based protections, while For Women Scotland argued they only apply to people that are born female.
Judge Lord Hodge said the ruling was not "a triumph of one or more groups in our society at the expense of another", saying the rights of transgender people were protected by law.
The ruling could have far-reaching implications across Scotland, England and Wales
