A powerful earthquake has struck northern Japan, off the coast of Aomori, triggering waves up to 70 centimeters. Surveillance cameras captured the moment the 7.6 magnitude quake shook the region. Japan’s Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami advisory for communities on the country’s Pacific coast. Earlier, the agency warned a tsunami as high as three meters could hit the region, prompting evacuation orders for tens of thousands. Authorities said nuclear power plants in the region haven’t detected any problems so far, but were still conducting safety checks. Thousands of homes are currently without electricity.
DW speaks to stormchaser and meteorologist Matthew Cappucci about the earthquake’s damage.
