On the eve of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa has declared Gender-Based Violence and Femicide a national disaster. The government was put under pressure by Women for Change, an NGO which organised the G20 Women’s Shutdown across the country and collected over 1-million petition signatures calling for this urgent measure. They launched a purple-profile-picture social media campaign that went viral. Vicky Stark was at one of the protests and filed this report from Cape Town, South Africa.
