Un-Blurring Biblical History – From Alexander to the Gospels.
Have you ever wondered what happened between the end of the Old Testament and the arrival of Jesus in the New Testament? Join John Barnett in this class as we bridge the gap between these two eras and bring the 3D world of the Gospels to life.
In this session, we will clear up the timeline of Scripture so the events of the Bible don’t just "go in the blender". Here is what we will cover:
1. Two Conquerors at Age Thirty-Three
Scripture References: General historical context between Malachi and the Gospels.
Summary of Coverage: We will look at the fascinating parallel between Alexander the Great and Jesus Christ. Both lived on earth for only 33 years. Alexander conquered the known world and died drunk; Jesus conquered the universe and died as a substitute. Alexander Hellenized the ancient world 300 years before Christ, bringing Greek culture and architecture to the Holy Land, which perfectly set the stage for the world Jesus would later walk.
2. The Stone Forests of the Decapolis
Scripture References: Mark 5 (The Demoniac of the Gadarenes) and Gospel accounts of the marketplaces.
Summary of Coverage: Alexander the Great started a league of ten cities known as the Decapolis. We often picture Jesus walking down dirt roads in primitive villages, but cities like Jerash (Gerasa) were magnificent. We will explore these advanced cities, complete with running water, sewers, massive 60-foot columns, theaters, and grand agoras (marketplaces). When the Gospels tell us they laid the sick in the marketplaces for Jesus to heal, it was in these highly civilized, paved architectural wonders.
3. Beth Shean: From King Saul’s Defeat to the Master’s Commute
Scripture References: 1 Samuel 13:10 (referencing the historical account of King Saul’s death).
Summary of Coverage: We will trace the history of Beth Shean, a city located 12 miles south of the Sea of Galilee, directly on the route Jesus would take from Capernaum to Jerusalem. A thousand years before Christ, it was the site where the Philistines nailed King Saul’s body to the wall. By the time of Christ, that ancient ruin had transformed into a massive, bustling Roman city that Jesus frequently walked past.
4. The 1,000-Year Mental Grid
Scripture References: General timeline of Genesis through the Gospels.
Summary of Coverage: To truly understand the Bible, you need a mental timeline. We will give you a simple, powerful grid to track history: Adam at 4,000 BC, Noah at 3,000 BC, Abraham at 2,000 BC, and David at 1,000 BC. Every time you read the Bible, you will instantly know exactly where you are in the progression of history.
