Welcome back to our small group study! John Barnett here. I want you to imagine we are sitting right across the table from each other, maybe at Panera or Starbucks, with our Bibles open and a fresh cup of coffee. Today, I am incredibly excited to introduce a class that brings the Bible to life by taking you directly into the ancient streets where the Apostle Paul walked, lived, and ministered.
If you want to understand the real-life historical context behind one of the most practical and corrective letters in the New Testament, you absolutely must join us for this lesson. Here are three memorable truths we will unpack together:
1. Addressing the Chaos: A Map of 1st Corinthians
Scripture References: 1 Corinthians 1-6; 16.
Summary of What’s Covered: We kick off the class by doing a quick, sweeping overview of the entire book of 1 Corinthians. We will see how Paul’s letter is basically a systematic response to a series of questions and deep problems within the church. We look at how the first six chapters tackle severe schisms and issues regarding marriage, meat offered to idols, and the Lord’s table. Then, we map out how Paul transitions into extensive, vital discussions on spiritual gifts and the doctrine of the resurrection, culminating in his personal messages in chapter 16.
2. Sacred Geography: Standing in the Roman Forum
Scripture References: The historical and geographical backdrop of the Corinthian Epistles.
Summary of What’s Covered: Next, we step directly into the archaeological excavations of ancient Corinth. I will help orient you to the magnificent city Paul saw, from the massive Odeon built just for music concerts, to the public theater. We will look closely at the ancient Temple of Apollo—which was already 600 years old when Paul arrived on his second missionary journey—and the famous Bema seat, a massive public speaking platform set right in the middle of the bustling Roman forum.
3. The Leather Shop and the Burdened Heart
Scripture References: Acts 17 and Acts 18 (context of Paul’s 18-month stay and his time in Athens).
Summary of What’s Covered: Finally, we will literally walk down the ancient Lechaion Road right to the marketplace where Paul actually worked. We will discover that Paul’s trade as a "tentmaker" meant he was a leather worker, likely crafting specialty personal travel tents—similar to modern umbrellas—that travelers used to shield themselves from the sun and rain. We will picture Paul sleeping in the upper room above his shop, working every day in the shadow of the pagan Temple of Apollo. Just as his heart was grieved by the idolatry in Athens in chapter 17, Paul spent his 18 months in Corinth deeply burdened by the fact that God was not being magnified, driving him to passionately preach the life-changing Gospel.
If you want to visualize the biblical world and be inspired by Paul’s relentless dedication to sharing Christ in a dark culture, grab your Bible, get your historical timeline ready, and let’s master the Scriptures together!
