Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed his military’s latest incursion into Ukrainian territory in Kharkiv is designed to create a buffer zone and not to capture the city of Kharkiv itself.
The new Russian offensive started a week ago and Ukraine has struggled to resist amid ongoing shortages of equipment and ammunition caused by a delayed western supplies. Our Europe correspondent Simon McGregor-Wood has more.
