How is the new Speaker of the House navigating a divided government? By squashing revolt from within the ranks and refusing to bend. Mike Johnson didn’t aspire to be the Speaker of the House, but that’s where he ended up and it’s where he intends to stay if his party can maintain control of the chamber for the next Congress. But Johnson will have to find/continue to find common ground with Democrats on key issues from tax policy, to immigration, to AI regulation. Based on the first six months of his unlikely tenure, he might just be the perfect person for the job.
