After Donald Trump was found guilty on all counts in his New York hush money case, The Washington Note Publisher and Editor Steve Clemons joins Wealth! to discuss what the former president’s criminal conviction could mean for the 2024 election.
Clemons calls the ruling a "defining moment historically," as Trump has become the first-ever criminally convicted US president. He believes that Trump will continue to play the victim card as a "kind of pugnacious nationalism" as he campaigns, which will likely "play well for those people who like Donald Trump and who feel frustrated with the system."
"Donald Trump is losing the reasonableness race right now of someone who’s likable. And I think it’s very, very hard to get a public to maintain anger and frustration for month after month. If there’s anyone that can do it, Donald Trump can," Clemons explains. However, he adds that at the end of the day, the public wants "to feel more hopeful and optimistic about something, and that is not what we’re hearing from Donald Trump and that’s not the campaign card that I think he’s going to play."
Trump’s conviction has fueled many of his supporters to donate to his campaign. Clemons notes that these donors are likely those who feel they have been taken advantage of by the system: "They don’t care about Washington. They don’t care about policy. They really want someone who’s going to be a wrecking ball for this place because it only brings them tragedy and, essentially, humiliation. And that humiliation in politics is something I don’t think Democrats have figured out how to reach to."
