Taiwan has commenced five days of military drills to simulate a response to a potential Chinese invasion, amid escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait. These annual Han Kuang exercises are designed to test and refine Taiwan’s readiness for such a scenario.

The drills follow the contentious inauguration speech of President Lai Ching-te on May 20, which China condemned for its perceived separatist rhetoric. China views Taiwan as its territory and has not excluded the use of military force to enforce its claim.

During these exercises, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense will assess the island’s capacity to defend critical infrastructure in the capital and enhance the resilience of essential facilities nationwide. On the first day, the Taiwanese military focused on defending a significant Taipei port.
In Taoyuan, near Taipei, reservists assembled to receive wartime orders, and civilian vehicles were repurposed to transport supplies. Additionally, Taoyuan International Airport will temporarily close for an hour on Thursday morning for drills. The exercises will also include intensified nighttime operations and tests of command line functionality under duress.

Running concurrently with the Han Kuang drills are the Wan’an civil defense exercises, which involve evacuating major city streets for half an hour during a simulated Chinese missile attack, with alarms sent to mobile phones.
China has been conducting regular military exercises around Taiwan for four years, aiming to intimidate Taipei into submission. These maneuvers often involve Chinese warplanes entering the airspace near Taiwan to showcase Beijing’s military strength.
