The political landscape in the United States faces a crisis, particularly within the two dominant parties, Democrats and Republicans. After years of solidifying their control and sidelining competition, both parties now confront the consequences of their undemocratic actions. They have rigged the primary system, making it extremely difficult for third parties and independents to get on the ballot, while the majority of party members fail to participate in the process. In the 2024 elections, the major party candidates were chosen by a mere 23% of eligible voters, or 34 million out of 149 million, highlighting the influence of the most vocal and extreme elements within each party.

Joe Biden’s withdrawal presented the Democratic Party with a rare chance to address two major crises: his declining health and the internal struggle between moderates and radical factions. However, instead of fostering open debate and allowing the party to chart a new course, a coalition of Hollywood influencers and party leaders decided behind closed doors to prevent any discussion about the party’s future.

Had the Democratic Party chosen to break away from the influence of the far-left, epitomized by figures like Bernie Sanders and the Squad, and instead embraced a moderate platform, they could have appealed to centrist voters and key donors. A moderate Democratic platform could focus on issues like gender equality, safe and legal abortion access, workers’ rights, opposition to monopolies, and racial harmony, without resorting to divisive identity politics.

It would also condemn the defacement of public spaces and universities by protesters and stand against antisemitism.
Rather than relying on fear-mongering about Donald Trump, a Democratic Party centered on moderate policies could potentially dominate the political landscape. However, the current reality suggests that Kamala Harris, seen as the choice of the party’s hard-left faction, will continue the status quo of division and conflict. Should she lose, it might prompt a re-evaluation within the Democratic Party, possibly leading to a reformation that could reshape American politics.
