The so-called Self-Determination Act coming into force on November 1 has been criticised as it allows people, including girls aged 14 and over, who want to change their gender entry with a simple declaration to the registry office.
UN Special Rapporteur Reem Alsalem expressed concerns about the privacy of women and girls, saying the law could have serious implications for safety of women and girls in spaces such as shelters, bathrooms and changing rooms.
She also warned that girls aged 14 and over can now change their gender without their parents‘ consent if the family court replaces the parents’ decision at the minor’s request.
