Pro-Palestine activists stage a silent protest in front of five polling stations in the DMV area (DC, Maryland, Virginia) to call on voters to remember the genocide committed in Gaza before casting their ballot.
Palestinian American activist Hazami Barmada and others had pieces of tape applied to their mouths, with the word “democracy” written in air quotes on each piece.
“We have a tape on our mouths that has the word democracy and air quotes because we are seeing a huge threat to democracy. We are seeing a crackdown on activism,” Barmadi tells TRT World.
On at least six occasions, police arrived at the voting site after Democratic and Republican affiliates threatened to call the police on the protesters.
One member of Barmadi’s group said an Israeli flag was seen at a polling site in Montgomery County, Maryland–a violation of electoral law.
Later into their protest, a Democratic voter physically and verbally assaulted Barmadi, blaming a potential Trump win on the advocacy of pro-Palestine activists. With police officers on site, they quickly proceeded to arrest the Democrat antagonist, she said.
