Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai took to the stand for the first time in his national security trial Wednesday, insisting his newspaper had championed democracy and "freedom". The 76-year-old is accused of colluding with foreign forces, after articles in his now defunct tabloid Apple Daily supported the sometimes violent pro-democracy protests on the island in 2019.
