Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal from consideration for the job of Attorney General was the first major setback for Donald Trump’s incoming administration. It suggests that there are still some guardrails for democracy in place, even as Trump is set to return to the White House with fewer checks on his power. Moving forward, it’s also an important reminder that the American people – inside and outside of government – can act as a check as well. “It is important to take a stand and it is important to be that guardrail because it matters for the rest of the country,” says Olivia Troye, who served as an advisor to former Vice President Mike Pence during the first Trump administration. “It matters for America.”
