While Syrian rebel leader Al-Jolani’s islamist HTS group is currently the face of the revolution in Syria, the opposition to the ousted Assad regime has been fragmented. Some fear that its most radical force, the Islamic State terrorist group, could use the current fragility in Syria to rebuild its capabilities. Turkey has played a significant and multi-faceted role in recent events in Syria, having backed groups like the Syrian National Army, which also opposed the Assad regime. Ankara has worked hard to prevent the establishment of a Kurdish-controlled autonomous regioon near its border.
