Turkey and Syria have been holding diplomatic talks in Damascus, the first since the overthrow of the Assad regime earlier this month.
Syria’s new leader Ahmed al-Sharaa and Turkey’s foreign minister Hakan Fidan held a joint press conference after their meeting. Fidan called for international sanctions on Syria to be lifted as soon as possible, so the country can start rebuilding its economy.
Syria’s new rulers, led by the HTS Islamist group, have been steadily filling posts in the new administration. For seven years, HTS has successfully governed Idlib, a region in Syria’s northwest. Now they hope to bring that experience to the entire country.
