US president Donald Trump has presented himself as a peacemaker: “My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier. That’s what I want to be — a peacemaker and a unifier,” he said in his inaugural address. He vowed to end the Ukraine war immediately upon taking office, raising expectations that he would leverage aid to force Kyiv into making concessions to Russia, which invaded in February 2022.
However, in unusually sharp remarks about Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he has previously admired, Trump pointed to Russia’s struggling economy and heavy battlefield losses. “He should make a deal. I think he’s destroying Russia by not making a deal,” Trump told reporters upon his return to the Oval Office.
Trump also mentioned that he was preparing to meet with Putin. A summit between the two during his first term gained notoriety after Trump appeared to accept the Russian leader’s word over that of U.S. intelligence.
