US President Donald Trump’s idea of depopulating and taking over Gaza was broadly welcomed in Israel, with officials praising the surprise proposal as a means to beef up security following the war with Hamas.
In the Arab world, the suggestion was taken differently. Saudi Arabia called the plan an “infringement on the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people” — a position echoed by governments across the Middle East.
The initial reaction on both sides was one of confusion. No one, including Israel, was expecting the new US President to suggest his country step in and rebuild the coastal Palestinian territory, creating a new “Riviera.” The approach would, according to Trump, require moving more than 2 million Gazans out of the war-ravaged enclave, with the president even raising the possibility of deploying US troops.
Bloomberg News Israel Bureau Chief Ethan Bronner reports on divergent reactions to the proposal across the reason as well as the status of the fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Ethan speaks with Tom Keene and Paul Sweeney on Bloomberg Radio.
