Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is becoming even more authoritarian. He has had his key challenger in the next elections, the mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu arrested. Tens of thousands took to the streets. The European Union condemns the arrest but stops short of threatening any action. In this Berlin Briefing DW’s Chief Political Editor Michaela Küfner asks whether Europe can afford standing up to Erdogan? Her guests, the crisis reporter Can Merey and former EU ambassador to Turkey Marc Pierini map out why Germany and Europe are so highly dependent on Erdogan on defense and migration. Both warn that there are no easy options as Europe balances its democratic values against its immediate interests.
