In a historic feat, scientists at biotech company Colossal Biosciences claim to have carried out the first successful “de-extinction” of a long-extinct animal species–the dire wolf.
Dire wolves, which gained popularity through their significance in the primetime fantasy television series Game of Thrones, went extinct nearly 13000 years ago.
Using a combination of cloning and gene editing techniques, scientists were able to birth three genetically modified grey wolf pups–named Remus, Romulus, and Khaleesi–that phenotypically resemble the larger, white-furred dire wolf.
Researchers developed mechanisms for targeted gene edits that resulted in the pups being born with marked differences in appearance.
