Pope Francis was often called the “pope of the poor.” Inspired by the Jesuit vision of poverty and the movement of priests working in shantytowns, he regularly visited some of the most deprived areas of the capital and beyond before his election — to evangelize, support social work, and simply to listen.
To explore his legacy among the most vulnerable, we visited one of the neighborhoods he frequented before becoming Pope, where he celebrated many masses.
