A limited number of UN-supported bakeries resumed operations in southern Gaza on Thursday, following the entry of small flour shipments into the Israel-blockaded enclave.
However, the UN warns that the 100 trucks allowed by Israel are “nowhere near enough” to feed the population.
“It is important to underscore that the limited supplies finally being allowed to enter Kerem Shalom are nowhere near enough to meet the needs in Gaza, which are vast, which are tremendous. Much, much more aid needs to get in,” said UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on Wednesday evening.
The UN says Gaza needs at least 500 aid trucks per day — carrying food, medical supplies, and other critical relief — along with 50 fuel trucks to address the worsening humanitarian crisis caused by the closure of border crossings.
“This is vastly insufficient. Children are in urgent need of food, water, and protection,” UNICEF said on Thursday, adding that just 508 pallets of life-saving nutritional supplies have reached its Gaza warehouse.
