It’s being hailed as a significant step towards ending the global HIV epidemic. The United States Food and Drug Administration has approved an injectable drug that prevents HIV infection.
Known by the generic name lenacapavir, the drug was almost 100 per cent effective at preventing HIV transmission in large-scale trials. Developed by the pharmaceutical company Gilead, it is administered via two injections every year.
