“This is again a perfect demonstration of the double standard and the hypocrisy of this government”
In an unprecedented crackdown on pro-Palestine advocacy, the UK’s Labour government announced it will add Palestine Action to the terror list.
A draft order under anti-terrorism laws is expected to be laid before Parliament next week, effectively outlawing the group.
If proscribed, Palestine Action would be placed on the same legal footing as al-Qaeda and DAESH under British law — making it illegal to promote or join the group. Violators could face up to 14 years in prison.
Metropolitan Police chief Mark Rowley called Palestine Action an “organised extremist criminal group.”
“We’re deeply concerned at the use of counterterrorism powers to target protest groups,” Amnesty International UK posted on X.
Since the start of Tel Aviv’s genocidal war on Gaza, Palestine Action has repeatedly demonstrated against arms factories tied to Israeli defence firm Elbit Systems, as well as other British companies with close links to Israel’s military and economy.
“We are not terrorists. We are teachers. We are fathers. We are nurses and students. We are a group of British people who just want this genocide to stop, and we are willing to do whatever it takes to stop it,” a protester opposing the ban told Reuters.
