The White House press secretary held a news conference after the US government shut down.
Karoline Leavitt said "the Democrats shut down the government because President Trump and the Republicans will not force American tax payers to pay for free healthcare for illegal aliens."
"We cannot afford to provide taxpayer funded free healthcare to illegals who broke the law to enter our country."
"The Democrats refused to keep the government open over healthcare to illegal aliens and now have jeopardised critical healthcare programs for American citizens instead."
