US President Donald Trump and New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani struck a conciliatory tone on Friday after meeting in the Oval Office, calling their discussion “productive” despite sharp political differences.
Trump congratulated Mamdani on what he described as an “incredible race” and said the two men shared a commitment to improving life in the country’s largest city.
He said they spoke about housing, food prices and energy costs, adding that efforts to bring prices down nationally would “be good for New York.” Trump said he would support Mamdani’s efforts regardless of party, telling him, “The better he does, the happier I am.”
Mamdani, a progressive Democrat who has previously criticised Trump, said the talks centered on affordability for New Yorkers struggling with rising rents, grocery bills and utility costs.
