Two West Virginia National Guard members who deployed to the nation’s capital were shot Wednesday just blocks from the White House in a brazen act of violence.
A suspect, who was in custody, was shot and had wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to a law enforcement official who spoke to The Associated Press.
Law enforcement was reviewing surveillance video from the scene and believed the suspect approached the soldiers and pulled out a gun, the official added.
“This happened just steps from the White House and it will not stand and that’s why President Trump has asked me -and I will ask the secretary of the Army to the National Guard- to add 500 additional troops, National Guardsmen, to Washington, DC,” Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said.
