Rwanda is accusing the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi of violating a ceasefire agreement, just days after the US-brokered agreement was signed.
That’s after Rwandan-backed M23 rebels entered the city of Uvira in eastern DRC, on the border with Burundi. Nearly 200,000 people have fled from their homes in eastern Congo in recent days.
If confirmed, Uvira would be the last major settlement in eastern DRC to fall to rebel forces. The region has been plagued by decades of conflict, killing tens of thousands of people and displacing millions more. Fighting escalated in January this year, after the M23 rebels seized several cities in eastern Congo. The area is rich in minerals vital to new technologies. Rwanda says a militia based in Congo poses a threat to its security.
