German aerospace engineer Michaela “Michi” Benthaus has made history as the first wheelchair user to fly to space, crossing the Karman line, internationally recognised as the boundary of space. After a few minutes of weightlessness, the capsule landed safely by parachute in the Texas desert.
Benthaus has been confined to a wheelchair since a mountain biking accident. Since then, she has campaigned for barrier-free access to space.
