Israel’s decision under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to recognize the self-declared Republic of Somaliland has been strongly condemned by Somalia, which insists Somaliland is an integral part of its territory. Somali officials, residents, and several countries including Türkiye, Islamic nations, and African states argue the move violates international law and threatens regional stability. While Somaliland has operated autonomously since 1991, fears are growing that Israel’s involvement could increase instability in the Horn of Africa, even as the United States has not followed suit.
