We’re kicking off 2026 by focusing on the rise of singlehood; where an increasing number of people are living without any romantic relationship at all. The Economist has reported that among Americans aged 25 to 34, the number of people living without a spouse or partner has doubled over the past five decades, reaching 50 percent of men and 41 percent of women. Since 2010, the proportion of people living alone has increased in 26 of the world’s 30 richest countries.
So what is driving this trend? Are we witnessing a relationship recession? And how much has dating culture in the digital era contributed to it? Annette Young speaks to Jessamy Holland, a sex and intimacy therapist based in Paris and from New York, Cindy Gallop, founder of MakeLoveNotPorn; an adult website designed to counter hardcore porn.
Also we look at how the sex tech and wellness industry is big business. As more women enter the sector, products are evolving in design, engineered to fulfil female desires.
