Myanmar’s military junta is holding the second phase of its long-delayed general election in 100 townships nationwide. The first phase with low turnout saw the junta-backed USDP win nearly 90% of contested seats. Despite ongoing conflict, voter distrust and the exclusion of pro-democracy forces, the military says the vote will legitimise its rule, while critics and the UN warn it will entrench military control rather than resolve the crisis.
