“Democracy dies in darkness. And you, Jeff Bezos, have turned off the lights”
Protesters gathered outside The Washington Post’s headquarters on Thursday after the storied newspaper, owned by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, announced layoffs affecting more than 300 employees, citing financial pressures and restructuring efforts.
Washington Post journalists, including international correspondents and Pulitzer Prize-winning metro desk reporters, were among those affected.
“These layoffs are shameful. The fourth-richest person in the world, Jeff Bezos, could run this paper at a loss indefinitely and refuses to do so,” national breaking news reporter Ben Brasch said during the protest.
