Whale sharks, the world’s largest species of fish, continue to draw divers to one of the Indian Ocean’s top scuba destinations.
Rarely seen due to overfishing, these gentle filter feeders survive on plankton and other tiny marine organisms, and despite growing up to 18 metres, they pose no real threat to humans. Whale sharks are listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, with populations declining by over 50% in recent years.
