Today’s field trip in Rome summarizes all those athletic metaphors that Paul loved to use in describing our shared life in Christ as believers. Paul ran the race, following Jesus who endured everything for us. So, we are to follow Paul as he folled Christ.
I challenged these Europeans who are training to reach Europe with the Gospel by this lesson entitled–The Agonizing Lap: Running the Race in Domitian’s Stadium. I’m challenging them at Piazza Navona, which sits on the ruins of Domitian’s Stadium. The Scriptures use the race track imagery to explain Paul’s words "I have finished the race" (2 Tim 4). The "race" implies an agony or struggle that must be completed.
Historical Background:
• Piazza Navona: Preserves the exact footprint of the ancient Stadium of Domitian.
Key Lessons:
1. Life is a Struggle: The Christian life is an "agony" (race), not a leisure walk.
2. Finishing Matters: The goal is to complete the laps assigned by God.
Scripture References:
• 2 Timothy 4:7-8
Application for Current Living: "Run Your Lap" — You are currently on your "lap" of the race. It might be agonizing, but do not quit in the middle of the track.
