US President Donald Trump hosted the first meeting of his Board of Peace on Thursday, pledging roughly 17 billion dollars for the reconstruction of Gaza. But that will only happen if Hamas disarms, an objective that still seems far from reality. Palestinians in Gaza remain sceptical about Washington’s reconstruction plans.
Meanwhile, two high-level talks in Geneva are under way, focused on the war in Ukraine and Iran’s nuclear programme. For Ukraine, there is still no breakthrough in the nearly four-year war. As for Iran, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described the talks as “constructive”, Trump says he is considering military action against Tehran, giving it 10 to 15 days to accept a nuclear deal or face consequences.
And more trouble at home for Trump. The US Supreme Court has ruled that his favourite foreign policy tool, tariffs, amounts to an illegal overreach.
All that, plus more stories from the week: Britain’s former prince Andrew’s arrest, Nato’s STEADFAST DART 26 exercise, Sudan genocide ruling and more.
And we are going behind the scenes with our teammates. This week, we speak to TRT World’s presenter and correspondent Jaffar Hasnain, who was recently in Syria, visiting a tunnel network left behind by the YPG/PKK terror group in Ayn al Arab.
