French authorities on Saturday warned against potential violence and called for calm ahead of a rally in Lyon organised by far-right groups following the death of a nationalist activist. "There has always been a history of political violence in France, and Lyon has traditionally been a place where that has often bubbled to the surface," said Andrew Smith, lecturer in Liberal Arts at Queen Mary University of London. Smith added that the city has a history of street clashes between opposing political factions, from the far right to the hard left.
