An amnesty law has come into effect in Venezuela, and on Saturday around 80 political prisoners were freed in Caracas, according to the president of the national parliament, after the measure was adopted under pressure from the United States following last month’s US military capture of President Nicolás Maduro; the law has triggered more than 1,500 amnesty requests and is expected to lead to further releases of people detained for political reasons, even as critics caution that it excludes some categories of prisoners and raises questions about how broadly it will be applied.
