Iran’s women’s national football team returned home to Tabriz, greeted by crowds with music, flower garlands and wreaths on March 17. The players, who had been offered asylum in Australia but chose to return, travelled via Malaysia and Türkiye before crossing the Bazargan border.
Several team members had earlier withdrawn their asylum applications in Australia after refusing to sing the national anthem ahead of their opening match at the Women’s Asian Cup.
