2. Spiritual Adultery: Recognizing the Prostitute of the World–James 4:4
Summary: The New Testament catapults the concept of friendship to the highest level. James shockingly addresses believers as "adulterers and adulteresses," declaring that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God. Why does God use such strong language? Because God is our husband, and the world’s system (Satan’s system) acts like a prostitute, desperately seeking to steal the affections that belong only to the Lord.
3. Misguided Desires: When Our Prayers Offend God–James 4:1–3
Summary: Who you befriend dictates what you desire. Dr. Barnett explains that when we become so entangled with the world that we constantly pray for worldly pleasures instead of eternal things that bring God glory, it actually offends God. We end up fighting, coveting, and asking amiss just to spend God’s blessings on our own selfish lusts.
4. The Media Trap: Rejecting the "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous"–James 4 / Proverbs 12
Summary: Our culture is obsessed with consuming media that celebrates sin. We spend hours watching popular shows about the rich and famous living in $10,000-a-night suites, entirely characterized by drunkenness and immorality. Dr. Barnett warns that longing for or entertaining yourself with the lifestyles the world celebrates is the ultimate evidence that you are picking the wrong friends.
