One year after deadly border clashes erupted between Thailand and Cambodia, tensions between the two neighbors remain fragile.
What began with a brief skirmish in May 2025 escalated into the worst fighting between the two countries in more than a decade, displacing hundreds of thousands of people and reviving nationalist tensions on both sides of the border.
But this conflict is about more than territory. It is rooted in colonial-era borders, contested cultural heritage, domestic political struggles, and historical grievances that were never fully resolved.
As tensions grew, regional and global actors, including the US and China, also stepped in to push for peace and stability but in their own ways.
