Thousands of students protested in Santiago on June 3 against President Jose Antonio Kast’s austerity measures and education budget cuts. The national strike, called by student federation Confech, led to violent clashes as police fired water cannons and tear gas to disperse demonstrators. At least one student was injured and dragged away by officers. Metro stations were temporarily closed during the unrest.
Kast’s approval rating has fallen from 57% to 38% since taking office in March, according to pollster CADEM, with many analysts and observers calling his administration Chile’s most far-right since Augusto Pinochet’s military dictatorship. Kast’s father was a German-born military officer and Nazi Party member who escaped US custody near the end of WWII and later immigrated to Chile, where his family became highly influential in national politics.
