Welcome to our small group study! John Barnett here. I want you to imagine we are sitting right across the table from each other at Panera or Starbucks, with our Bibles open and our notebooks ready. Today, I am incredibly excited to pitch to you a class that will open your eyes to the invisible spiritual reality all around us.
If you have ever felt overwhelmed by spiritual attacks, or if you want to understand the vast spiritual hierarchy of angels and demons, you absolutely must join us for this lesson. Drawn directly from our class session, here are the life-changing truths we are going to uncover together:
1. The Invisible Hierarchy: Angels are Powerful, but God is Supreme–Isaiah 6; Ezekiel 28; Daniel 10.
Summary of What’s Covered: We kick off the class by looking at the staggering power of the angelic realm. Angels are supernatural, indestructible beings that don’t need spaceships, rest, or food. We will explore the biblical hierarchy of the spiritual world: from the seraphim, the four cherubim, and the seven archangels around God’s throne, all the way down to the fallen realm. We look at Satan’s commanders, including the terrifying "Destroyer" (Apollyon/Abaddon) who killed the firstborns of Egypt, as well as the demonic "nation princes" of Persia and Greece mentioned in Daniel. But the greatest truth we uncover is right in the title: no matter how powerful angels are, God is infinitely greater than the sum of everything He created.
2. The Ancient Foe: Standing Firm in the Invisible War–Ephesians 6; 2 Corinthians 2; Jeremiah 15:16.
Summary of What’s Covered: Next, we expose the enemy’s playbook. Satan is alive and well, operating as the god of this world. His primary objective is to distract you from spending time in God’s Word and to pluck the Gospel out of people’s hearts before it can take root. But God says do not fear! We look at Paul’s command in Ephesians 6 to put on the whole armor of God. I’ll also share the story of Martin Luther in Wartburg Castle, who faced intense demonic attacks and penned the great hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," reminding us that though the prince of darkness is grim, his doom is sure because "one little word shall fell him".
3. The Ultimate Weapon: Wielding the Sword of the Spirit–Ephesians 6:17; Psalm 19:7.
Summary of What’s Covered: Finally, we get incredibly practical. How do we actually fight back against these spiritual hosts of wickedness? By taking up the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God wielded in faith. In this section, I pull out my own personal memory cards to show you exactly how I memorize and meditate on Scripture every single day. We will look at tools you can use—like the MacArthur Scripture Memory System or the Navigators system—and I will teach you my personal "first-letter" method for hiding verses like Psalm 19:7 in your heart so you are always ready for battle.
