God often redirects our paths through unexpected circumstances. Dr. Barnett shares a humorous story from 1987 when he was studying in his office for a senior citizen Sunday school class. His pastor pushed his face against the glass door to announce he had received three major speaking invitations. The pastor chose to speak to millions on television, sending a young Dr. Barnett in his place—in John MacArthur’s stead—to travel to South America.
2. The Systematic Theology Test: Character in the Quiet Moments
Character is revealed by what you do when you think no one is watching. On the 24-hour flight down to South America, Dr. Barnett spent the time reading a 1,200-page systematic theology textbook. Unknown to him, the wealthy, godly Christian chicken farmer from Pennsylvania who had fully funded the trip was sitting directly across the aisle in bib overalls. The sponsor intentionally chose that seat to silently observe Dr. Barnett’s character and discipline on the long flight before finally interrupting him to get to know him.
3. The 40-Year Legacy: A Lifelong Partnership
That single, unexpected trip to Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Ecuador was Dr. Barnett’s very first exposure to Word of Life. Because of that divine appointment almost 50 years ago, he and his wife Bonnie have had the immense privilege of teaching every single first-year student at Word of Life Bible Institutes for decades.
