Welcome back to our small group study! John Barnett here. I want you to imagine we are sitting right across the table from each other, maybe at Panera or Starbucks, with our Bibles open and our notebooks ready. Today, I am incredibly excited to introduce to you a class that will completely change the way you view world history and biblical prophecy.
If you want to understand how God looks at the timeline of the universe and why certain nations are heavily featured in prophecy while others are not, you absolutely must join us for this lesson. Drawn directly from our class, here are the monumental truths we are going to uncover together:
1. God’s Prophetic Compass: Viewing History from the Holy of Holies–Daniel 2; Isaiah 14.
We kick off the class by looking at the famous statue from Nebuchadnezzar’s dream in Daniel 2. You will learn that God doesn’t view human history through the lens of great empires like the Mayans, the Chinese, or even the Egyptians. Instead, all of history revolves around the city of Jerusalem.
In fact, God’s very compass is oriented from the Holy of Holies—looking out the Eastern gate, East is "front," West is "behind," North is "left," and South is "right". We will trace God’s prophetic map of the empires that impact the end of the world: Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, and the final "feet of clay and iron," which is the revived Roman Empire of the Last Days.
2. The Prophetic Mountains: The Near and Far View of Isaiah–Isaiah 14:1, 12.
Next, we dive into how the Old Testament prophets actually saw the future. Looking at Isaiah 14, we see Isaiah perfectly blending near-term events, like the destruction of Assyria and Babylon, with ancient cosmic events, like the fall of Lucifer from heaven. We will learn that Isaiah could see all the way from eternity past to eternity future—including the coming Antichrist and the glorious Millennial Kingdom (which makes up a full 20% of the Old Testament).
However, just like looking at mountain peaks, Isaiah couldn’t see the "valley" in between. That valley is the Church Age—the parenthetical time we are living in right now where God has temporarily set Israel aside to work with the Church before He takes us home and resumes His final plan for Israel.
3. Unbreakable Promises: Why Israel is the Key to the End of the World
Scripture References: Woven with the events of the Day of the Lord.
Finally, we tackle a massive theological divide: Covenant Theology versus Dispensational Theology. We will explore why great reformers like Martin Luther mistakenly believed that God was completely finished with the nation of Israel. I will show you from the scriptures why one-fifth of the Old Testament is utterly meaningless unless there is a literal, future nation of Israel. We will see that God’s promises are unbreakable, and a physical Israel must exist for the Antichrist to make a covenant with them, and for Jesus to physically rescue them at the climax of the Day of the Lord.
