With a career spanning more than seven decades, David Hockney’s joyful and optimistic talent made him one of the world’s most popular artists.
He created some of the most memorable images of the 20th and 21st centuries – his painting Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) was sold at auction in New York for $90m (£70m) in 2018.
He attributed his long life to his ‘joie de vivre’ which he said was essential to longevity.
