Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has welcomed Donald Trump’s Iran deal as a “first step”, but says further negotiations and technical talks are still needed.
Speaking to political correspondent Ali Fortescue, Cooper said any lifting of UK and European sanctions would remain tied to progress on Iran’s nuclear programme, stressing that Tehran “must not” develop a nuclear weapon.
She also said Iran should take the lead in clearing mines in the region, arguing it “should know where they put the mines in the first place”.
The comments come amid wider regional tensions, including ongoing concerns over escalation between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
