The church at Ephesus was planted directly in Satan’s shadow, yet it experienced one of the greatest and most powerful revivals in biblical history.
Welcome back to our small group study! John Barnett here. I want you to imagine we are sitting right across the table from each other, maybe at Panera or Starbucks, with our Bibles open, our journals ready, and a fresh cup of coffee.
Today, I am incredibly excited to introduce a class that takes us deep into the heart of a "miracle church" to see how God’s Word can completely conquer the darkest, most hostile environments. If you want to know how early believers survived a highly demonic, materialistic, and sensual culture, and how to apply those exact same lessons to your life today, you absolutely must join us for this lesson. Let me walk you through three memorable, life-changing truths we will unpack together:
1. Planted in Satan’s Shadow: The Hostile World of Dark Ephesus
Scripture References: Ephesians 6; Acts 19.
Summary of What’s Covered: We kick off the class by looking at the staggering geographical and historical context of Ephesus, located in modern-day Turkey. When Paul arrived here on his third missionary journey, he walked into the godless heart of the Eastern Roman Empire—a city completely dominated by the Temple of Artemis.
We will explore the sheer wickedness of this temple, which was filled with temple prostitutes, occultism, and demonic activity. It even served as a legal sanctuary where thieves and muggers hung out because they couldn’t be prosecuted within its perimeter. We will also visit the excavated 20,000-seat theater where an angry mob once chanted "Great is Diana of the Ephesians" for hours, threatening to rip Paul apart. Yet, as we see in Acts 19, God’s Word powerfully prevailed in this dark place.
2. The Called-Out Giants: The Legacy of the Miracle Church
Scripture References: Revelation 2.
Summary of What’s Covered: Next, we look at the incredible fruits of this revival. We will define the Greek word for church, ecclesia, which literally means "the called-out ones". Out of this dark pagan culture, God called out a group of believers that grew to number as many as 50,000 at their peak. Ephesus became a magnificent spiritual hub; it was the home church of Paul (who spent three years there), Mary the mother of Jesus, and John the Apostle. We will trace the legacy of Timothy, who pastored here and was eventually martyred for his faith. We will also explore why Jesus chose to write His very first letter in Revelation to this zealous church, commending them for their fervency.
3. Sovereign Behind Bars: The Lessons of the Prison Epistles
Scripture References: Ephesians; 2 Timothy; Titus.
Summary of What’s Covered: Finally, we look at how Paul wrote this letter. Ephesians is a "prison epistle" written between AD 60 and 62 while Paul was in chains in Caesarea or Rome, awaiting trial before Nero. We will look at Paul’s life timeline, discovering a remarkable lesson in patience: Paul spent 14 years in training to prepare for just 10 years of active missionary service. Even while suffering on death row—from which he eventually wrote 2 Timothy—Paul’s eyes were fixed on the sovereign plan of God. We will learn how to surrender our own daily trials to the Lord, trusting that He is using our circumstances to shape us for His eternal glory.
