Welcome back to our small group study! John Barnett here. I want you to imagine we are sitting right across the table from each other, maybe at Panera or Starbucks, with our Bibles open, our journals ready, and a warm cup of coffee.
Today, we are diving into a study that shifts our focus away from the noise of the world and toward the daily, intentional decisions we must make to delight our Creator. Let me walk you through three memorable, life-changing truths we will unpack together:
1. The 48-Degree Wood Fire: Surrendering to Hear His Voice
Scripture References: 1 Corinthians 3.
Summary of What’s Covered: We kick off the class by looking at the heart behind our study: learning to hear God’s voice. I will share my personal morning devotional routine of getting out of bed at 5:30 AM in the dark, standing in a small circle of surrender to pray, "Lord, I can’t wait to hear your voice," and sitting outside by a wood fire in 48-degree weather with oatmeal and coffee. We will learn that Bible study is not a mechanical note-taking contest, but a regular avenue for the Holy Spirit to commune with our hearts, assure us of our calling, and remind us that we are useful to Him.
2. The Harvest Mandate: Overcoming Division and Seeking Divine Wisdom
Scripture References: 1 Corinthians 2 & 3.
Summary of What’s Covered: Next, we will tackle the first of the essential choices Paul outlines to please God. We will learn how to actively identify and avoid the trap of spiritual rivalry, which manifests today when we divide over denominations, favorite teachers, or mega-churches. Instead, we must rejoice in God’s global harvest, pursue the divine wisdom detailed in chapter 2, and cultivate Christlike, spiritual responses to all of life’s challenging questions.
3. The Spiritual Snowflake: Deploying Your Gift for Eternal Hope
Scripture References: 1 Corinthians 11 & 15; 1 Peter 4.
Summary of What’s Covered: Finally, we will explore the glorious motivators of our service: earning spiritual rewards and using our unique gifts. Drawing a beautiful connection to 1 Peter 4, we will learn that every believer is designed like a "spiritual snowflake," uniquely gifted with either speaking or serving gifts. Whether you are called to speak encouraging words or quietly serve behind the scenes—cooking, cleaning, helping in the youth ministry, or setting up—using your gift allows you to please God and live in the daily hope of our future resurrection in chapter 15.
If you want to move from merely reading the Bible to actively making choices that please your Creator, you need to grab your Bible, sit by the fire of His Word, and let’s study together!
